A Place for Finn

This was the state of Finn's room just a few weeks ago.

That's my baby sleeping in the middle of it all. I'm not proud.

We've come a good long way since then. Though his room isn't finished yet, it's quite livable.

We decided to use Montessori philosophy when setting up Finn's room, because we want it to be a place where he can just be without us having to watch over him constantly. The basic premise is that everything in the room is accessible to him, and everything that is accessible is safe. I think we may end up changing a few things--the little nightstand by the windows will be replaced shortly by a low bench, and I'd like to have a short, child-sized wardrobe in place of the dresser. I might also consider replacing the bookshelf with something just a tad shorter.

There are several aesthetic changes I'm planning to make as well.

Elizabeth at Oh, Fransson! has a great tutorial for fabric boxes, and I'm planning to make some for the middle bookshelf (and possibly the top one as well...we'll see!)

The print that is currently sitting on top of the bookshelf (Dream by Regina of Creative Kismet) will go over the bed once it is framed. Soon. Maybe.

The walls around the bed might be a bit...full. We'd like to put a square mirror at the head of the bed (under the print) and a long, full-length mirror on the long side. Also over the bed, on the long side, will go two large maps--one United States map and one world map. I'd like to put the maps in frames (without glass, so we can touch the maps), but I haven't found any that are big enough. If you have a source for frames that are at least 38x50 inches, let me know!

Lots and lots of mirrors in this room, I tell you! We purchased a square mirror for the space next to the door. It has a shelf and three pegs under the mirror, and it'll be hung low enough so that Finn can see himself in it. The pegs will be nice for hanging sweaters or jackets (or whatever he wants, I suppose!)--easy to grab on the way out. We may eventually keep a comb or some other grooming implement (??) on the shelf so he can fix himself up on the way out as well. I'm definitely planning more for a time when he'll be able to do things like that for himself. He is only 3 months old, but I know the time is going to fly by, and I'm certainly not going to become any less busy as he becomes more mobile. Best to plan a bit for the future now.

On second thought, maybe I should be working on a way to freeze these moments. Off to snuggle the babe!
