So, What Are You Doing For Education?

Yesterday, a saleswoman stopped by and tried to sell me some educational materials for my son, and she asked me the question, "What are you doing for education?"

Really?

My son is a year-and-a-half, and there are people who believe that now is the time to be starting his formal education (if I'm not already way behind!).  (I didn't take the time to explain that, despite the fact that my husband is a public schoolteacher, we're not actually planning on any sort of formal education, now or in the future.)

I was completely blown away by the question, and sort of stumbled through an answer along the lines of, "Um, we read, we talk to him, we name objects."

Nobody has ever accused me of being overly articulate.

But, really, what should his education look like?

We don't need vocabulary lists or flashcards with colors and shapes.  These photos--this is what his "education" looks like.  He plays, he explores, he experiments.  He observes and imitates and repeats.  He touches and tastes and listens.  I've never made any attempt to formally educate my son, and yet he's learning so much and having a blast while he does it.

Really, can there be any better education?
